Protective gloves and other personal protective equipment are subject to continuous quality control. The quality of this equipment and its classification into different protection classes is regulated by standards. The relevant standards are DIN EN ISO 374, DIN EN ISO 16523, DIN EN ISO 6529 and F-739. The concentration of the chemical in relation to time are continuously recorded. As soon as the concentration exceeds a predefined value as a function of time, one speaks of a breakthrough. From this point on, the PPE no longer protects the user from the tested chemical. ]]>LABC-Labortechnik has developed various products for permeation measurement in laboratories since 1988. Our range includes products for measurements in the collection medium water as well as in the gas flow. As detectors we offer FPD, FID, PID electrodes, as well as pH electrodes, conductivity electrodes and redox electrodes.
Our Qumat and Permobil workstation measure in the gas flow with a detector. This means that the collection medium is a gas. Here you have the option of using air or nitrogen as the collection medium. The measurements in the gas flow are carried out in an open loop system.
The NW50liquid workstation and the NW50 liqui permeation cells are operated with water as the collection medium. The collection medium is a deionised water. The permeation measurements take place in a closed loop system.
The Qumat®-Q401-HR analyser is used to measure the permeation rate of chemical protective gloves and clothing. The analyser measures the breakthrough of test chemicals in three permeation measuring cells according to DIN EN 374, DIN EN 6529, EN 16523 or F-739. The glove tester Qumat®-Q401-HR is available in two versions and differentiates only by its detector. The Qumat®-Q401-HR can be supplied with FID or with FID and FPD. The overview of detectable chemicals provides information on which detector is suitable for your application.
Gloves are clamped into the permeation measuring cells, filled on one side with the liquid test substance to be examined and continuously flown through from the other side with a gaseous collection medium. These three defined gas streams are analysed in sequence for the volatile detectable test substance. The results are documented in tabular form. In addition, the temperature and airflow are recorded for each measurement.
If a test substance with a permeation rate > of 1 µg min-1 cm-2 passes through the test specimen, a breakthrough according to DIN EN 374-3 and EN 16523-1 is present.

Stainless steel migration cells of LABC-Labortechnik are produced in highest quality according to EN DIN ISO 2768-1. All stainless steel center rings and fixing plates are marked with individual batch numbers. An individual factory certificate is supplied for each product on request. Temperature resistant -15 °C to 180 °C, pressure-tight up to 9 bar (depending on material)
With the help of the Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cells, a migration assessment of packaging ingredients from food repackaging can already take place on the finished roll goods.
Tests have shown that temperature equilibration by diffusion is sufficient when the migration cell filled with a simulant remains upright for 24 h.
There is no need to turn around. The migration cell is easy to close or open with stainless steel knurled screws. Their compact, space-saving design can be stored horizontally or vertically for temperature control in drying ovens or bath/circulating circulators.
In the Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cell system, many sizes and thicknesses of packaging in a wide variety of material compositions can be tested with all liquid and solid food simulants.
For studies with solid food simulants (E) poly-2,6-diphenyl-p-phenylene oxide (MPPO), the Tenax kit is used. Some customers also use the Tenax kit for migration testing with oil, as the fixing plate with the GL45 spout is easier to clean in the dishwasher than the center rings with the GL14 pour-in and GL14 pour-out spouts.
The Sieg-Mi-Flex MIgration cell is then subjected to the test conditions with one test piece lying horizontally at a time. Due to the high temperature resistance (-20 °C to 180 °C) and the high pressure tightness up to 9 bar, stainless steel migration cells System-Siegwerk (Sieg-Mi-Flex) can also be used for liquid food simulants under test conditions beyond their boiling point.
Migration cells of the Sieg-Mi-Flex type are basically suitable for migration tests, among others according to EN1186. Migration tests can be performed with cloths, papers, foil or cardboard packaging, gloves and many other materials or surfaces.
The following simulants can be used in the migration cell “Sieg-Mi-Flex”:
(A) Ethanol 10 % vol
(B) Acetic acid 3 % wt.
(C) Ethanol 20 % vol.
(D1) Ethanol 50 %Vol.
(D2) vegetable oil with specific fatty acid distribution from VO EU 10/2011 (PIM)
Also, according to EN1186 and Directive 97/48/EC, substitute simulants such as the solvents isooctane and ethanol 95 % vol. can be used, as well as other alternative simulants that do not chemically attack the materials stainless steel (V4A 1.4571), PTFE and FEP (tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer).
The Sieg-Mi-Flex cells are completely disassembled for cleaning and left for approx. 15 min. sonicated with isopropanol at room temperature in an ultrasonic bath, then dried. Then rinsed with ethanol pure LC-MS quality and dried again.

Due to the flexibility and modular design of the System-Siegwerk (Sieg-Mi-Flex) migration cell system, many sizes and thicknesses of packaging of different material compositions can be used for migration testing with all liquid and solid food simulants, food simulants for substitute testing (isooctane, ethanol 95 vol.%) or solvents from pharmaceutical formulations even beyond their boiling point on a defined sample area and with subsequent storage depending on time and temperature. The migration cell system Siegwerk (Sieg-Mi-Flex) following EN 1186-1:2002 (D), Annex C (informative), Figure C.4-Cell Type B and Figure C.5-Cell Type C, was developed and tested in cooperation with the analytical department of Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co. KGaA.
